Do you think we have done a proper job building our lives totally dependent on her?

You call her ‘Mausi’, ‘Akka’, ‘Didi’ or ‘Bhaiji’... She is the same everywhere and forms a quintessential part of the lives we built.

We need her help in cooking, her efficient hand in doing the household chores, her care for babysitting or her advice on matters where we need solutions like what should I do when my grains are infested? They help ease our burden or help us strike a balance between our career and personal life. It is a common notion that the theory of comparative advantage comes into play here as jobs are done by someone who is more efficient at it.

The relationship with our maids do have ups and downs (as mentioned in one of my earlier blogs ), but we work on it and understand each other and grow fond of each other.

Soon, we will realize the story behind her, Yes, there will be a story behind every maid – poverty, a drunkard husband, widowhood, old parents, the list goes on. The odd jobs can barely assure 3 times a meal that the chances of their younger generation following the same livelihood are high. Lucky as far as the future generation of privileged is concerned.

I do not wish to empathize on their sufferings as it ain’t going to change anything.

For a moment, I just want you to think what if she wasn’t there to help you out? You will be overburdened; the so-called work-life balance would go for a toss and either of the spouses might have to stay home for taking care of the child.

Sure, we should thank poverty for all the help we are getting.

But, deep down I feel there is something wrong in the way we built our lives. In the rat race, which we are stuck for eternity, we are not finding time for ourselves. We are checking every item on our list at the cost of a better future for her.

Now, I want to ask everyone who felt sympathy towards the underprivileged. Do you think we have done a proper job building our lives totally dependent on her?
